Water Bowls for Community Animals

As temperatures rose and Pune faced another hot summer, the heat became a real danger for community animals. For them, surviving meant dealing with hot pavements, dehydration, and searching daily for water that was often hard to find.

FurrCrew believes in taking small and effective steps to improve the lives of community animals, bringing more people together for greater impact.

This year, we partnered with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to expand the project across the city. Over 300 sturdy cement water bowls were placed near residential areas, commercial spots, public spaces, and shaded corners where community animals rest.

The bowls did more than provide water - they inspired new habits and sparked conversations.  FurrCrew focused on creating a system that encouraged and supported the community to care for their animals. Volunteers, shopkeepers, security guards, residents, and children started taking responsibility for refilling water and cleaning the bowls.

This summer, Pune didn’t just focus on staying cool. It chose to be kind by showing up with a bowl of water when it’s needed most.

Reflective Collars for Community Animals

The streets are home to many community animals who try to navigate the busy roads and often end up in accidents. To help reduce these incidents, FurrCrew launched a reflective collar initiative to improve their visibility and keep them safer.

The collars were distributed across the city. FurrCrew worked with on-ground volunteers who were familiar with the local dogs, their routines, and the areas where accidents were more common. In busy roads and narrow lanes with poor visibility, volunteers placed collars on dogs they already cared for and fed regularly.

As more dogs started wearing these collars, other volunteers began reaching out - some requesting more collars, others offering to help. In response, FurrCrew expanded its support by helping with vaccination drives and providing care tips to those looking after community animals.

The reflective collars soon became a symbol that the dogs wearing them are cared for. It showed that someone was looking out for them - a small but meaningful step toward better welfare.

Winter Welfare: Blanket and Gunny Bag Drive

FurrCrew’s Winter Welfare campaign was launched to support the night watchmen who stay out through cold winter nights to protect our homes. Many of them, despite limited means, show quiet compassion by caring for community animals - offering them warmth, food, and often, companionship.

As part of the campaign, we distributed blankets to the guards and gunny bags for the dogs - small steps to help both find some comfort during the winter.

What stood out most were the conversations. Many of the guards spoke about the animals like they were family. “Life gets lonely,” said Shashikant Prabhakar Shirsat, a security guard in Pune. “But just being around a dog takes that feeling away.” “I look after them because I believe these small acts are seen by God,” said Bajirao Khandolkar, who feeds the community animals and gives them a place to rest. “And honestly, that’s enough for me.”

This initiative was about more than distributing supplies - it was about acknowledging the people who quietly make space for animals in their lives, and showing up for them in return.

Animal Welfare Programme for The Poona Club

The Animal Welfare Programme at The Poona Club golf course was initiated to create a safe and structured environment for the nearly 50 community dogs that live there. FurrCrew worked closely with the Club, addressing each concern with simple, thoughtful solutions and offering guidance at every step.

It began with decoding pack social structure and movement patterns. This insight helped introduce open shelters, aligned with each pack’s territory, to facilitate easy feeding. Reflective collars were provided for easy identification.
Ground staff were sensitised to canine behaviour and safety protocols, enabling them to engage with the dogs more confidently. The Club was also connected with Canine Control and Care to facilitate sterilisation and vaccination.

The initiative fostered peaceful coexistence - people were able to interact with the dogs with ease and awareness, and the dogs appeared noticeably calmer and more trusting.
